Happy 2012 Everyone!
I thought I would start out the new year on my blog showing some "New" transformations on some dolls I have been restoring. I have been working on many new projects which I will be showing this year both with dolls and other items.

I thought I would start off with this little Happy Tot doll that I purchased a couple of years ago.

She was a terrible mess. Someone had tried to restore her and oh how sad she looked with her terrible paint job. I knew this doll would be adorable once she had a little spiffing up.

Happy Tot was made by American Character Doll Co. from New York city in the 1920's.

She has a composition head/breastplate, arms and legs. Her body is cloth and her eyes tin.

As you can see from the photos she was in desperate need for a transformation. Cracked, lifted paint along with discoloration, holes and dirt.

One thing wonderful about her was that she came with her original tagged dress and slip. After a little mending and cleaning it looks much better.

Here she is after getting a total repaint and clean new clothes. I later changed her bonnet with one that looked much better but at the time I just wanted to see how she looked with a cute little pink bonnet on.

I adore this little doll...she has always been one of my favorites from that time period. These dolls typcially held little rubber tipped bottles but I don't have one at the moment so she holds a tiny little bouquet of sweet flowers for a sweet little girl! ;-)

MADAME ALEXANDER 1920'S MY BETTY COMPOSITION DOLL 24'

This is a darling doll that I purchased at a local antique shop. She is marked "Fiberoid" on her back and I believe she is a Madame Alexander 1920's My Betty Composition doll.

She was in pretty good condition really only needing a new wig, clothes from her era and a good cleaning. Her clothes were not appropriate for her so she would get a new dress ang wig.

Her hair is wild and thin. Time for a new hairdo!

I was hoping to find a dress with original tags but as I have stated before, dresses like that can be hard to come by. Until then I did find a dress that looks cute on her and from the time period.

Here she is with her new dress and bonnet on. She also got a new slip and panties.

What a difference a new human hair wig made on this sweet little doll.

Snippets from the Sewing Room

Last year I decided to make a small bedroom into a sewing room. Originally, I had my sewing room combined with my studio for sculpting and other projects. I thought it would be nice to separate them and give me a little more room for my studio. I am sure most of you know....you can never have too much room for creating. So I thought it would be fun to show little snippets here and there of projects in the works and some of my favorite things I have collected over the years. So I will start with this one little corner of my room!

I started my room off with a color scheme in mind. I found some fresh pink and bright lime green fabric that I fell in love with. Sweet wild roses on a white background was the basis for the pops of color here and there around the room. These 3 little shelves were found cheaply at the thrift store. I painted them a pink to match my curtains and lined them up on the wall. They hold some of my favorite things. Above them is a beautiful cross stich picture stitched on fabric by an artist named Paula Vaughn. She is a cross stitch designer and watercolor artist. For many years now she has created some of the most beautiful victorian and country designs that I have ever seen. I have stitched many of her designs myself. This is one of my favorites and as luck would have it I stumbled across this piece in a antique store and got it for a song. The colors were perfect and someone did a great deal of work on this beautiful piece of stitchery. I am always sick when I see such beautiful needlework so under valued in the stores. Hours and hours went into this piece and I am happy to have rescued it. Now it will be proudly displayed amongst my most treasured items.

As I share different photos here and there her designs will show up often as I have been a huge fan of her work for years!

Here is a closeup of the picture. Her designs remind me of a gentler time.

I just love her soft use of color.

Princess Sarette and her Fairy Attendent OOAK Art Doll

It has been awhile since I have posted any new One Of A Kind dolls so I am happy to report that I have a new one called "Princess Sarette and her Fairy Attendant".

I really enjoyed working on this piece. She incorporates everything I love about dollmaking. Faeries, Princess's, Fine Fabrics, Embellishments, all things unique and magical!

Sarette is made of Cernit and is approx. 18" seated. She has glass paperweight eyes, lovely long auburn mohair and a beautiful cream/antique rose print dress. I love old vintage lace so I incorporated many fine pieces into the front of her dress and along the sleeves, bodice etc.,
She also wears a OOAK crown I made especially for her. Old metal findings, antique rhinestones and vintage pearls highlight her crown to make it a truly old world style. Her hair is pulled up into a high coif with tiny braids that circle around the crown.

Her little Fairy Attendent is approx 10" tall standing. She is made of Fimo and also incorporates vintage cobweb lace and trimmings. She has handmade glass eyes, creamy soft hair, a handmade crown and a tiny little bobble which reads "Fly" Her little wings are also handmade by me. She is there to make sure Sarette has everything she may need. A sweet little fairy loyal to her princess.

Sarette also holds a antique frozen charlotte fragment dug from the grounds of Thuringia Germany. She has been made into a little fairy doll for Sarette to hold.

Sarette sits upon a vintage metal chair purchased for her at a local antique shop.

Princess Sarette and her Fairy Attendent will be available for purchase soon.

Changing of the Seasons

Well...it is hard to imagine that fall is upon us once again and I haven't posted here since spring. I have had good intentions but this year has been a difficult one with 3 deaths in a period of 6 months for our family. It has taken its toll both physically and mentally. It has been a time of much reflection.
As I watch the leaves starting to turn and feel the warmth of summer fading into a cool fresh nip in the air I am reminded how the seasons come and go and that life is like the changing seasons. We hope for days of warmth and sunshine, but along lifes path we encounter those days of cold and unexpected weather. All we can do is try to weather the storms the best we can and hope for those beautiful days to shine down upon us once more.

I feel a new sense of self, an awakening perhaps after seeing so much pain and suffering. I have come to realize that my art has been a strong force in the healing process. It has always been a place where I feel the most at ease and content. Little did I realize just how much it would help me to refocus and get back to the place I needed to be after what feels like such a long absence. It has been a driving force in my life and I can't imagine how life would be without it.

So... I am anxious to get back to work and share some new things with you. Thank you to all of my faithful followers. I hope I can bring some new and exciting things to share with you this year and as each beautiful leaf falls to ground I take notice and appreciate the small gifts life offers us everyday. I hope you will too!

Welcome Spring!

I hope everyone had a beautiful and joyous Easter.

It has been awhile since I posted so I thought I better pop in and update my blog.

It has been a hard couple of months with first the loss of my father and then most recently our

sweet dog Sadie whom we cherished for over 11 years. As with most grieving it seems to take awhile to get back to the normal everyday coming and goings in life. I miss them both very much.

We have had a very cold spring here where we live. It seems like winter just keeps hanging on but I did see the sweet little bees out working some spring blooms which always makes me smile. They are such amazing little creatures and what would we do without them? I love to watch them dive deep into a pollen filled flower and come out with little bits of pollen all over their legs like they are wearing little chaps. Such hard little workers they are. So I have attached a photo of this little bee and some spring blossoms to share with you. Knowing that Spring is just around the corner makes my heart sing!

I do have some new things to share with you which I will be sharing very soon.

I want to thank those of you that emailed me and posted such heart lifting words of comfort. You have no idea how much it meant to me. It was so kind of you to take the time to write. It is amazing how much an email can lift someones spirits....Thank you so much...I will never forget it!

Norman Hart Sept 1932 - February 2011 R.I.P.

After a long and courageous battle with a blood disease called myelodisplasia and congestive heart failure my father Norman Hart passed away February 9, 2011 here at home.

He was a veteran of the Korean war where he fought on the 38th Parralel Line,Pork Chop Hill, Baldy Hill and Heartbreak Ridge. He was also a bronc and bull rider

and continued to love and care for horses even up into his elderly years. An avid fisherman and hunter he loved the Wind River Range of mountains in Wyoming where we will scatter his ashes this summer around the 4th of July. As a special tribute to my father we are planning a Lone Charger Memorial Procession which we think would be

appropriate for him since he loved horses and fought in the Korean War. The

Memorial Procession is led by a lone riderless

horse with a pair of boots set backwards in the stirrups and the saddle stripped. An old horseman tradition.

His talents were many. Wonderful dancer, artist, mechanic and creative person in everything he did. He could take a piece of junk and make something beautiful with it.

His wildlife oil paintings are scattered all over the U.S.

R.I.P. Dad

We love you and you will always be in our thoughts....

"Hold The Reins In On Her"

What a delightful surprise to find out that a childhood photo of me and my dolls was recently published in the March 2011 Issue of Doll Collector Magazine!

Doll Collector is a wonderful magazine and so supportive of doll artists around the world.

I am truly honored to be a part of this publication.

I thought while we were on the subject I would share a few more photos of me and some of my dolls as a child.

Finding some of these old photos really brought back some memories that I had long forgotten.

Friend?...or Foe???

This photo was taken when I was a little over a year old.

I wasn't quite sure what to make of this big ol teddy bear but it didn't take too long

before he became one of my favorites!

What a soft, sweet fellow he was!

Perfect for snuggling up to on my naps.

What little girl doesn't enjoy having a tea party with her dolls. Here we were enjoying cinnamon rolls and milk.

I can't remember this doll at all. She is one of the ones that got lost somewhere along the way.

I was pretty good about

taking care of my dolls. I hated it when other kids would come over and try to pull their hair out or throw them around. I was always pretty gentle with them. Perhaps that is why I still have some of my old dolls...I always took good care of them. ;-)

I still like having tea with some of my best girlfriends. We try to have a special tea a few times a year.

When we do get together we try bring along something to share ...a favorite doll, recipe, craft or special tidbit. Always so much fun to get together! ;-)

My mom had a thing about "Pixie" haircuts.

You can't tell by this photo...but I really was scared of this doll and the shoes I had on really hurt my feet!

I remember that very vividly! LOL :-D

I was told to pose with her for the Christmas snapshot.

My mom bought her because she thought we looked alike with our "Pixie" haircuts.

I guess we sorta did...but there was something about this Giant Doll that I just never could

warm up to. Maybe because she was sooooo BIG...a monster of a doll! LOL :-D

I remember that I named her "Furlinda" and where I ever came up with that name is beyond me!
Things we do as kids...where are our minds?????

Notice the little paint set in the background? Another little glimpse into my future self.
I have always loved painting and used to paint in oils and acrylics before doll making took over most of my time. I try to get back to it now and then whenever I get a free moment. One of my favorite things on earth is the smell of turpentine and oil paints in my studio!

There is that purple cat again (Loved animals both stuffed and real...still do to this day) and

sweet little Shrinking Violet!

I loved her...but unfortunately her voice box didn't last more than a day or two.

I was heartbroken that she quit working. My dad tried everything to get her fixed but to no avail.

I still have her...she was a classic!

Christmas with my stuffed beagle dog, a rubber jester and Cheerful Tearful.

Cheerful Tearful would cry and frown when you bent her arm down.

The rubbery jester doll I have is sitting up on my sculpting table as I speak.

I never could figure out what he was made of. It had such a squishy, strange feel to it and has somehow lasted all these years.

You wonder sometimes what some of the toys were made of.

Kinda like Stretch Arm Strong was when my boys were young.

(Always wondered what was inside of him) ???

I have always believed that the toys we play with as children give us a glimpse into adulthood what

our interests will be and what we become later on.

I have found this to be true with so many people I know.

Dolls are recorded to have been found clear back

even B.C. in ancient tombs and

pyramids.

When I find an old tattered doll I wonder about who the previous owner was, where she may have lived, what her life was like. When I sculpt a doll I wonder where her new home will be and what the new owner will be like.

It is so obvious that dolls have played a major part in civilizations for many, many years.

It is no surprise that they continue to play a large role in our lives as doll manufactures and doll artists produce thousands of dolls every year and doll collecting is still the number one collectible.

I believe they play an important role in our lives and can teach us so much about our history.

I know my dolls were a big part of my life as a little girl and continue to be an enjoyable part even now as an adult.

Happy New Year Everyone!!!

Wishing everyone a Healthy and Happy 2011!

Santa was very good to me this Christmas and blessed me with a new little puppy!

We named her SAGE and she has brought us so much joy!

She is a red heeler and has become very loyal to me already. Heelers are such smart and loyal dogs.

I was wanting a dog that I could

take on walks and go on horseback rides with as our Dear Sweet Sadie which is half heeler and half border collie

is just getting too old to handle that kind of exercise anymore.
She is coming up on 14 years old and arthritis

has made it very difficult for her to walk.

We still love her and she has been showing the new puppy the ropes around here which SAGE has become very anxious to learn.

What a pair they have become!

I wanted to tell everyone that I am so sorry for not posting of late and keeping up with everyones blogs. I am running terribly behind and feel so bad about it.
They say that people want to hear about "Real" things going on in peoples lives instead of how wonderful things are all the time when posting in our blogs...so I guess this is my "Real Thing" that is happening to me at this moment.

For the last several months I have been having problems with dizzyness and just not feeling like myself. I couldn't put my finger on it...but I knew something was not quite right. In October I was outside taking care of my horses and doing some other chores before coming in to start my day sculpting. I became so dizzy I couldn't stand up and thought maybe I was having a stroke or something then later in the day I started throwing up. This went on for hours until I finally could not take it anymore and told my husband I needed to go into the er. They did all the standard tests, ekg, blood tests, cat scan etc., but the only thing they could find was that I was deyhdrated. They gave me fluids some prescriptions for nausea and sent me home.
In the meantime I was to schedule an appt with a new cardiologist since the company my husband worked for had changed insurance companies and all the doctors I had previously were not under the same plan.
So about 3 weeks ago I was in the cardiologists office and this vertigo hit me again. I was very sick and after an hour or two in the dr's office they decided I should go to the er again. After several tests and a few hours later the er doctor came in and said they wanted to do an mri. That test was not fun at all...they put you in a large tube where you cannot move your head at all. The machine bangs and bangs for over an hour taking pictures of your head. Finally after about half hour the doctor came in and told me that they found what they call a Schwonnoma Tumor in my head. It is a benign tumor that rests below the brain and is usually on the nerve from either ear or the stem of the brain. Only about 1 in 100,000.00 people get this type of tumor and it is caused from a missing gene of all things. (Maybe I should have bought a lottery ticket with those odds) ;-)
The problem with these tumors is that if left untreated they can cause, hearing loss, paralysis of the face, inability to swallow and ultimately death. So I was in total shock
never thinking in my wildest dreams that I would have something like this...but it all made sense thinking back on my symptoms. Ringing in the ears, fullness in ears like you need to pop them..but can't, the nausea and vertigo and occassional balance issues. So...I am in the process of seeing a ear, nose and throat doctor and then I am sure from there it will be on to a neurologist. Reading and reading on the internet to find out as much information as I can on the type of treatments. I have joined a wonderful forum called Acoustic Neuroma Association where people that have this type of tumor come and share their experiences. So far I am very grateful for this group as they have been so supportive and helpful.

Our family has also been dealing with my dad who has been having many health issues too. He lives with us and I have become his main caregiver which makes it very difficult sometimes when I can hardly function myself.
His situation is very up and down at the moment and could change with each day. We are just trying to take it a day at a time.

Life has a way of throwing us curveballs when we least expect it but I am thankful that this is not cancerous and there are many things that I am thankful for at the moment. I realize that I am going to have to slow down for awhile which means not working so hard which I have done for many years. I have always been a work ahololic so now I need to focus on my health and take it easy on other things.
I am still trying to work on dolls on my good days...so I will be showing some things from time to time.
I do have some things I will be posting soon but I just wanted to give an update here on my blog so people won't think I have disappeared from Blogland! ;-) I do miss everyone and visiting everyones blogs but even being on the computer for very long can set off my vertigo which has forced me to limit my surfing the web.
So there you have it...I hope I haven't bored anyone. Life is still good...I count my blessings every day and am so thankful for my family and friends. I will be back soon with some updates and some doll related subjects that I want to share.

Stitches In Time

"Stitches in Time"
is what I call my work on the new and old dolls that I create and work on every day.

This vintage image by Jessie Wilcox Smith, a wonderful illustrator of a little girl surrounded by her dolls as she intently works on repairing and stitching their clothes captures how I feel as I work on both old and new dolls here in my studio. The little dolls all lined up on a shelf waiting patiently for their bright new dresses, a new hairstyle and little "spiffing" up. The new OOAK's waiting to emerge from the clay or receive their new beginnings.

It is a fun and creative process which I have enjoyed for many years. I have many old dolls that are awaiting the same thing...all lined up in an old doll bed that was mine when I was a little girl.

Despite my bouts with health issues I have been able to get a few things done here and there.

The last few weeks I have been working on a few to share with you along with a new OOAK in the works which is taking a little longer than I had expected.
I typically work back and forth between my OOAK's and my doll restorations. This is what works the best for me and I am much happier that way. ;-)
Pull me away from one or the other and I can become quite grumpy. :-/

So... instead of fight it I learned to just go with it. So first I would like to show you a couple of doll restorations I have completed recently and then some other items of interest.

...Before Photos...
This is a Composition Shirley Temple Type doll that I purchased last summer on a trip to the Oregon coast.
I found her in an antique shop all frumpy and dirty.
She was wearing a beautiful bonnet and long dress but it was totally inappropriate for her.
So I took it off...washed it and will use it on another doll at a later time.
She is approx. 21" tall and has a blond mohair wig

She had several issues. Her eyes were blown, pin dots in face, chippy lip color and bad overall comp crazing.

Her mohair wig was so matted down I thought about giving her a whole new wig but decided to try to untangle her matted mess. Luckily...and after much patience I was able to fluff up her hair.

....After Pictures....

Here she is after my restorations.

I left most of her face alone. I figured I could live with the small imperfections on her face but I did touch up
her lips, cheeks and eyes. Her hair was styled into a cute curly style.

I made her a slip from vintage lace and fabric, dressed her in a vintage pink window pane fabric and slipped on a darling vintage bonnet that I had found in my stash of doll items.

She looks much happier now with her pretty new outfit!

The next doll is a 22inch Composition Mama Doll.
She is unmarked and came to me in a very torn and dirty outfit.
The dress was completely in shreds and so were her little shoes unfortunately.

Her face was not to bad so just some minor things were done and the rest left alone.

This darling dress and bonnet were perfect for her.

Tiny little pink Rosette ribbon roses were pressed open so that they would show in all there sweetness
and not smashed up as they were when I found the bonnet.

I added a silk ribbon and vintage pearl button tie to her bonnet.

She is such a cute baby doll!

I will be showing more photos of restorations in weeks to come.

Now to One Of A Kinds.
I am still working on a larger OOAK doll that will be a Princess with her fairy attendant.
She is actually much further along than this picture as I am finishing up her dress whenever I get a moment.
These are just a couple of pictures to show you her head and the color of mohair I chose for her.

The fabric that I found is gorgeous!
A beautiful creamy sherbert orange with an antique rose
print.
I was drawn to the fabric because it has allowed me to do an inset panel using some of
my vintage laces that have that old ecru patina to them.
I love old lace and have collected it for years so this has allowed me to incorporate these antique pieces into her dress.
Here is a picture of some of the items going into her dress.

I hope to have her completed soon!

While we are on the subject of beautiful things...I wanted to share with you some of my

treasured handmade vintage silk roses.

This first one I purchased at an antique store. The case is actually a Hanky Case but I fell in love

with it because of the beautifully handmade roses. These roses are one of my favorites for adding to

dolls dresses and hats. They are what they call Rolled Roses made from silk ribbon. The roses are made in such a way that the top

edge of the ribbon is folded down and the petals are formed with this technique. This is a

beautiful example of that technique. I use this Hanky Case for holding some of my more

special ribbons.

Another special flower that I have in my collection is this very vintage spray of roses

still with the original tag that reads "Made In France" I love this piece as it is also well

executed and has withstood the test of time.

The ribbon itself has beautiful edges that you just

can't find in ribbon today.

I felt it was so special I placed it in its own frame.

Another little sweet piece of ribbon are these adorable baby ribbon rosettes.

These are tiny little roses that were probably made for embellishing lingerie or baby items.

These were also found at a local antique store and I just adore them.

I recently placed a small length of them around the collar of a Patsy Type Doll that I restored.

They added just the right touch on her little pink dress.

This is a shoebag I made many years ago for a needlework class I was teaching.

This bag is made of taffeta with a handstiched center panel adorned with ribbon and

a tiny bullion rose. Bullion Roses are also some of my favorite things to adorn doll dresses and bonnets.

They are fun to make and have such a delicate look to them. A tiny bullion rose on the front

of a dolls dress, collar or sleeve is the sweetest thing ever.

Lavender Stuffed Hearts with hand stiched bullions roses for placing inside the shoes.

These are just some ideas for adding special touches to your doll clothes whether One Of A Kinds

or Antique Dolls.

I hope you like them...

I will close with a view of a sunrise taken a few days ago of a mountain that is right across from our home.

It never ceases to amaze me how many times I have photographed this mountain over the years

and how the beauty can change from season to season.

This particular morning the clouds were absolutely stunning with the sun rising up behind them

and creating this amazing sunrise to start my day.

Little Bo Peep

My version of Little Bo Peep.

Poor little Bo Peep is so worried and beside herself that she has lost her sheep that she hasn't even noticed that they have snuck up under her petticoats to hide. Silly Sheep... what a handful they are! Always playing tricks on her and making her a nervous wreck. Baaa'd little sheep...but it is all in good fun!! ;-)

These little sheep were all made by needlefelting with wool roving.

Handsculpted with Fimo polymer clay, handmade eyes with soft mohair wig.

Outfit made from scratch with silk ribbons, teenie tiny handmade buttons and a darling pansy design for her dress.

I especially enjoyed working on her bonnet.

I have always loved bonnets and have a large selection of old baby bonnets I have collected over the years.

I just can't resist them!

This one was just Too Fun to create!!!

Patsy Ann 14" Effanbee

This is Patsy Ann from Effanbee company.

She is from about 1928 made of composition and 14" tall. I rescued her from an antique store. She needed a little TLC. Her eye was totally gone, her arms flaking horribly and she was in need of some clothes. I love the fabrics from this era. Finding old prints is getting harder and harder but luckily some wonderful new prints are available based on these old designs. I try to add to my collection whenever I find a new print I like. There are some really sweet ones available.

Once I settled on the dress fabric I made her little outfit from a vintage Patsy Pattern and added the bow to her hair. She really didn't need too much work but just enough to make her sweet and attractive to look at.

The shoes are temporary as they are not from her era but I am still looking for a vintage pair to replace them with. I just put these on her until I find some. These dolls are so appealing with their little bobbed hair styles I just love them!

Back in the Saddle Again!

Well....I can't belive how much time has passed since I last posted. Has it really been since April??? I don't know where the time has gone. I apologize for being gone so long and I miss visiting with my dear blogger friends.
The last 3 months have been a whirlwind. Dealing with family health issues...in and out of the ER and ICU with my dad who has a serious blood disease kept me spinning and from there to dealing with local issues regarding a possible dam being built in our area that would have put our home along with many other homeowners under 400 feet of water. I spent the better part of a month dealing with local officials and enviromental groups trying to make the public aware of what was going on in our area. Very frustrating and mind boggeling that tearing up this beautiful area that we live in and uprooting people from their homes was even a consideration for these government officials.
So..... after a much needed quickie vacation to the Oregon coast for a little R & R after 2 months of stress and upheavel I am happy to say that I am "Back In the Saddle Again" ;-) Ready to post some new things of late...and catch up with all of you.
Sometimes we get side tracked by "Life" and what it throws our way...but I am thankful that I have the almighty God there with me every step of the way giving me the strength I need to work thru lifes curveballs. He is my rock and fortress!!!

This little pixie girl is made from a combination of polymer clay and needlefelting.

I love the look of needlefelting and it is such a joy to work with.

I just had to incorporate it into this piece.

Her head, hands, feet and legs are polymer, the rest is needlefelted wool.

Vintage Flowers, buttons, and trims make up her dress.

Antique German Bisque doll Easter Figures

Easter is coming and I have been feverishly working on some new items for this beautiful holiday.

I fell in love with these antique doll heads after learning about their long journey back into existence.
These porcelain bisque heads are over 100 years old and have been dug from the grounds of a porcelain factory in Thuringia Germany around 1900. The heads are from dolls that were damaged at one time or another and thrown out into a pile that were covered up over time with dirt. The heads are usually broken off at the neck line and occasionally have a nick or crack on them depending on how they were handled.

These little heads which have survived all these years buried deep in the earth makes them even more special and rare.

I became facinated by their journey back into existence and decided that they needed to be brought back to their glorious selves. After a good cleaning I make their bodies out of wool roving which has been needlefelted and then begin to make the clothing and place them in their setting.

I love the old German Candy Containers and paper mache figures from this period so I try to place them in a similar setting. So my first 2 figures I decided to place in a Easter setting. New dolls will be made for different occasions depending on the doll. Some will also have porcelain arms and legs and some with the needle felting. So keep watching as new ones arrive. Each one is a One Of A Kind. Made with vintage trims and occasionally new trims if appropriate. They will be for sale in my Etsy Shop and Ebay.

OOAK Pincushions and Etsy News!

It is still winter here where I live...and this time of year I yearn for the warmth of the sun and the flowers as they begin to emerge from the ground. I am itching to get outside and work in my garden, go for long rides on my horse and just be outside enjoying the sun.

It is all I can do to stay inside after our long winters until the last remains of the snow have melted and the ground begins to warm up. One good thing about it is that I do get much more work done and have been working on some different items for spring. I wanted to let you know about some changes on where I will be selling my new work. As mentioned in previous posts I enjoy restoring old dolls when I get the time. So I thought I would share another group of photos of a doll I restored about a year ago. This dolls name is Flossie Flirt. She is from approx. the 1920's , made by Ideal Toy Co. and the thing that I love about her is she has these sweet little tin eyes that roll from side to side.

When I purchased her she was in such a disarray I felt so bad for her. Chiped paint all over the compostion and dirty. She was dressed in some kind of a German outfit which was totally inappropriate for her. As is with most of these dolls the clothing is tattered and usually not the original style that the doll was dressed in. I really try to dress them as closely as possible to the original style. I am always scouring antique shops and the internet for special dresses.

She did have her original shoes and socks which was nice but she was in terrible shape on her legs. Someone had used bandaging tape to hold her little legs together. Poor thing! ;-(

Her hair was a mess but still the original wig which I was happy about so I gave her a new do. and after much sanding, repairing and airbrushing I think I accomplished what I had set out to do. A friend gave me her little dress which looks so much cuter than the awful little thing she had on. A tiny cotton print with soft yellow flowers. I made her a new hair bow with a handmade silk ribbon flower that I made especially for her. I am looking for a little pin to place on the bodice of her dress. I think that would top it off very nicely.

Her dress was a little too long in the above picture and the style for this era was fairly short...showing their little bloomers so I hemmed the dress a little shorter to look more appropriate.

I know some people frown on doll restorations and yes in some instances the are not acceptable but I feel that if the doll so bad that they are not appealing to look at anymore and that further time is only going to damage them more I believe that is the time to do something to preserve them. Anyway...here are her before and after pictures. I hope you like them!

Odelle's Opera Dreams

My first new piece for 2010.

This piece incorporates many techniques all of which I enjoyed working with.

The doll is made of polymer clay and has been painstakingly dressed in a lined gorgeous red rose brocade with matching shoes. This fabric is exquisite! I love brocade fabrics and try to incorporate them into my work whenever I can. The shimmer on the dress adds such a statement to the whole of the piece.

Beautiful blue glass paperweight eyes and auburn tibetan hair.

Hat was made from an antique french doll pattern.

She sits upon a little stool inside of a shadow box which I lined with flocked, glittered paper and vintage images. I wanted the feel of a Opera Theater but also the feel of Paris back in the late 1800's early 1900's
I found some wonderful images which I thought captured those times. Some of the images are from The Graphics Fairy a wonderful source for vintage graphics. "Thank you Karen' ;-) A postcard to her dear love, a special evening in Paris, the performance of a lifetime perhaps....The images portray what this young lady could be dreaming about and leaves it up to you the viewer to decide what they mean.

Sneak Peek

It is hard to believe it is 2010. This year has flown by. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.

I have been working on several new projects which I will be showing in the next couple of weeks.
The first piece is called "Odelle's Opera Dreams"
I am giving you a glimpse as I am putting the finishing touches on her today. It was a large piece... but a fun piece to work on. I should have more detailed photos in a couple of days.

Taking time to enjoy the simple things...

The holidays are upon us and I have been going like a whirlwind trying to complete new pieces in the studio, preparing for Thanksgiving and thinking about Christmas gifts along the way.

I woke up this morning to see this beautiful herd of elk across the way from us and it made me stop for a moment and take a deep breath. We get so busy with our daily lives that sometimes we forget to stop and enjoy the beauty that is all around us. Taking a moment to watch this herd as their little calfs play and jump around their mothers is a sight to behold. The arriving snow and chilly mornings make them playful and alert. Beautiful, majestic animals that help to remind me of the simpler things in life and the joy of the season....

What's On Your Bulletin Board???

Bulletin Boards...what would we do without them? Keepers of tidbits, memory joggers and favorite things. I would be lost without mine. They are forever changing with whatever happens to be my interests at the moment. I have several in my studio and thought I would share a few of mine. To me... bulletin boards are like magazines ....you can tell alot about the person by what magazines they have in their home. Here is a glimpse into mine.... ;-)

I have two bulletin boards above where I sculpt.

This one has reference sculpting sheets, some favorite quotes, some vintage postcards, vintage doodads and one of my favorite things a wooden cross made of olive wood from Jerusalem.The olive tree grows in the Holy Land and can survive for up to 2000 years. Jesus prayed in Gethsemane next to an olive tree that some say still exists to this day. I have a deep faith in God and this little wooden cross is always there to remind me of His love and sacrifice.

This one is also on my sculpting table...favorite cartoons, images, scriptures, my trusty Ipod, (I have to have listening music...plain and simple) journals, skeleton reference and a great cartoon I took out of a old Painting magazine from years ago when I was oil painting on canvas. The cartoon depict's a little fellow all ready to start a new painting but then he realizes it just isn't his day. I think we all have those days you start out with the best intentions...ready to create... and then...things just don't go as planned. Grrrr.. This cartoon has been on my bulletin board for over 30 years. It has been with me for many years of creating and always brings a smile when I look at it. It has a lot of meaning to me. Comical but oh so true.... LOL

This bulletin board is one of 2 in my sewing area. Favorite pictures of me and my horse Benta, new silk ribbon, more vintage postcards, silly cartoons, a sketch my son did of a fairy when he was about 9 years old, a vintage valentine my husband gave me on valentines day, and a sweet little sketch/doodle my husband did one day while on the telephone that he presented to me after he got off the phone. Very comical and sweet...it reads "Hey babe...wanna Smooch?" LOL ;-D

These images are from a Vogue magazine from several years ago. I have notebooks full of dresses that I love to have for inspiration. These are some of my favorites.

Simon Halbig Doll #1078

I thought I would share some pictures of some dolls that I have restored until I have a new photo of a OOAK doll to show you. This doll was purchased at a yard sale 3 years ago for $1.50 She was completely apart with her german glass eyes floating around in the bottom of the basket she was in. Mouse droppings were inside of her arms and legs. ( ;-O) Can you believe it!!! ) And by a miracle she had no cracks inside of her head. She was so dirty but I knew she was very old and could be brought back to her spectacular self. I restrung her, and had her eyes reset, resculpted one missing finger and cleaned her up. She still had the original wig just needed some cleaning and restyling. I am always searching for vintage laces and trims so I had purchased this particular dress several years ago. The old "Whites" as they are called are perfect for these old dolls. I altered the dress a little bit, made her shoes from a vintage german doll shoe pattern and dressed her as authentically as I could. She is from around 1910 so almost 100years old! I love her and she now looks so cute standing on a table in my guest bedroom. ;-)

"Be Back At Midnight" Pumpkin Fairy

A new piece just completed for the ADO - Challenge -Halloween.

This piece is a mixed media piece incorporating many styles. The idea for this piece came from the pumpkin itself. To me.. pumpkins are so magical. The big round orbs hiding amongst the vines and leaves have such an element of surprise to them. What is more fun than seeing one that has been secretly hiding amongst the leaves growing and growing unawares until it is discovered. They seem to play many roles in famous fairytales so I thought it would be fun to incorporate the doll into the pumpkin and place a story inside. Cinderella was the first thing that popped into my mind. I wanted something visible but not so distracting that it took away from the doll. Silhouette's came to mind as I have always found them to be appealing. Simple but elegant. Pumpkins always remind me of Halloween but I wanted a different twist on it for this challenge. Cinderella or perhaps another young lady race to get back Before Midnight or Else. It leaves that up to the viewer to complete the story in their own minds. The pumpkin was hallowed out and the scene placed inside. Vintage rhinestones, papers, buttons, etc. were used to make it a OOAK. Thank you for stopping by!!!

Stella my 1969 vintage camp trailer

After seeing a picture years ago of a vintage travel trailer restored I always wanted to try it. So this summer I spent one month totally restoring a 1969 trailer from start to finish. Everything you see in her I either made or added from my personal collections. It was a fun project I shared with my dad and husband. I worked like crazy to get it ready in time for camping and one month to the day we bought her...we took her out on her first camping trip. Thought I would share her transformation with you...

Stella Before and After Pictures

The cowgirl image above is the only thing left I have to do on Stella. Taken from a vintage postcard and revised a bit this image will be painted on the outside of my trailer next to the door.

Covered the cushions with an old red bedspread, made the pillows, curtains, from red and white gingham. Much spiffier now!!

Blah...Blah..Blah...Took the top bed part out and my husband made the 2 curved cupboards from the piece we removed. Made for much better storage and seating. Much cozier now too!

I am not a fan of the old avocado and gold colors. ICK!

Hated these cushions, couldn't wait to get my hands on them.

After getting a makeover with my cherry red paint I think she looks much sweeter now. Love the look of the 30's and 40's so I was thrilled when I found this reproduction fabric with the fruit on it for making my kitchen curtains. Used my computer for the cherry border along the bottom of sink area and added some vintage chalkware fruit plaques to the walls and cupboards. Embroidered the little tea towels with cute motifs and I also found a darling red tea kettle too!

Cowgirl Collage Quilt Wall Hangings

One of the most fun projects I had with this little trailer was decorating her up. Lipstick and Rouge as they say! LOL In the process I made these little wall quilts to put on the walls. Favorite vintage postcard images along with favorite quilts, tidbits of fabric, and other misc items from my stash went into these fun little pieces. Loved the quotes and just the little bits and pieces of nostalgia that made each one unique. Ideas for these quilts came from a fantastic artist by the name of K.C. Willis. She was my inspiration for these. Thanks K.C.!!!

This quote is so very, very true! Doesn't she just look happy on the back of her faithful steed? A favorite belt buckle that my husband gave to me added just the right touch at the top of the quilt.
I thought this lady was so elegant in her own special way. I added a favorite heart shaped rock from my rock collection and some vintage flowers, buttons and rhinestones.
I think this one is actually my favorite. Love these quotes and the pictures of these ladies are wonderful. These women worked hard, had calloused hands but could also be so tender with their children and livestock. I admire them and try to pattern my life after them...

Alot of people don't realize that most cowgirls prided themselves in how they looked and presented themselves. Hours and hours went into their makeup and costumes before their shows. This picture reflects the workmanship that was put into her dress. Check out the equisite embroidery on her skirt. Gorgeous!!!

Misc. Fun Additions to my trailer decor

This was another garage sale find. An old wooden stirrup with someones brands on it. I made a lamp out of it, added the shade with horse images and red rick rack on it for a little color.

One of my most favorite things is this antique leather and heart breast collar I found at a yard sale. It was hanging on a fence for years, dry and tattered. I was drawn to it by the heart shape but when I turned it over there was this gorgeous red rosette still in all of its brillant colors attached to the front of the leather heart. I was thrilled!! How it withstood the elements for that long...I am amazed. I brought it home, cleaned up the leather and silver and it now takes a place amidst my special horse tack in my home and trailer. Isn't it just beautiful!!!

Another thoughtful gift from my good friend Susan for my little trailer. Isn't this the coolest!!!

This trailer had the ugliest gold plastic inserts in the fronts of the cabinets...all I can say is "UGLY" So I replaced them with pictures from some of my vintage postcards. Painted the fronts red and added the little gingham floral designs to the front.

Vintage cowgirl figurine, and cowgirl salt shaker. Tad Lucas a wonderful cowgirl is featured in the shaker complete with wings and faux salt. Wonderful lady with fantastic personality. Anyone that knows me knows that in almost every room in my house I have "Winged Things" so...I had to have a "Winged Cowgirl" in my trailer or it just wouldn't be right!!! LOL ;-)

Halloween Challenge

Well...I must say August was a hectic month for me. Huge outdoor projects to complete, barbecues, camping, picnics, etc., but I have been working on some new pieces whenever I get a free moment. ADO is having a Halloween Challenge that will be the first one I have ever done so I am excited about it. Eeek!!! Doll Heads!

I wish I could say I was one of those artists that can start a doll and sees it to completion...but unfortunately that just isn't the way I work sometimes. Of course...when it does work out that way, I am happy as a lark, but most often I can sculpt a head and it can sit for days, months, even years before I get back to it again. I guess I start out with good intentions but if the doll doesn't become clear to me right away they get placed aside until one day the inspiration strikes again for me to pick them up and start again. Sometimes they turn into something completely different than I had envisioned. So...I thought I would show some of the ones that are here and there around my studio. Some are large doll heads, others are for full sculpts and so on depending on the size I am working in. Patient little things... waiting for their creator to pick them up and bring them to completion.....

Half Dolls

I love dolls of any kind and for awhile now I have been collecting half dolls to make into pin cushion dolls. Here I have a tiny 1" tall little doll along with a gorgeous german half doll that I made up along with a new wig for her. I have always worked with silk ribbon and fine threads and for a short while taught Brazilian Embroidery at a local needlework shop. Here are a few photos of some of my works in progress, completed dolls and a OOAK pin cushion doll that I sold to a wonderful collector in California. The top photo is 2 new dolls I purchased recently just waiting patiently for me to make them new dresses. They are so much fun to create...you just can't stop with one! ;-)

Glimpses of our garden...

One of the things I enjoy besides sculpting is gardening. It takes up much of my time thru the spring and summer but I cannot imagine my life without it. A place of peace and inspiration. We took a bare piece of ground and over the years transformed it into our little getaway. All of it was done by us...no contracted labor. Every stone, plant, and structure on the property we placed or built it there ourselves. Just thought I would share...Hope you enjoy it!!!

I thought it would be fun to show some glimpses of my studio since I have never done that before. So I will start with this photo of an angel that sits in my studio behind where I sculpt. She is a large garden ornament that I just couldn't bare to leave outside. I brought her inside and she watches over me as I sculpt and go about my daily routine. I am a firm believer in guardian angels and this lovely angel reminds me of that everytime I see her. She brings me much joy!!! Hope you like her too! Warmly, Marcie

Our garden is "Alive" right now with the birds building their nests. I look forward every year to the same ones returning once again to make their homes here. This sly fellow makes the perfect little nest for his darling and protects her faithfully until the babies are out of their home. This picture cracks me up! As if he is saying "You want a piece of me"? They are such smart little birds and every year I play this game with them where I take the clumps of dog hair that I brush out of our dog Sadies winter coat...blow them up in the air where they soar like feathers...the birds swoop down and come from everywhere to sweep them up into their beaks. They carry the little clumps of hair off to build their nests with. It is an amazing thing to watch and I can't help but think...what cozy little nests they are making for their young with my dog and horses hair....;-)

Well...as promised...I present "Zoey"
This doll has been a piece that I have been trying to work on the last few months off and on as time permited. I had a romantic french style dress in mind when I started working on her. Her colors are very soft, dusty antique peach tones made with antique fabrics. She stands on a decoupage rose base and comes with a little faux bird and faerie on a flower. Very fun piece to make...with gorgeous dragonfly wings. Watch for her to be listed on ebay soon....

Been a hectic few months....

It has been a hectic few months. Along with dealing with some health issues of my own to recently making a trip to Wyoming to move my father in with us and dealing with his health I have not been able to sculpt as much as I would have liked. So I hope you will bear with me as I trudge through this process and hopefully I will be able to get back in gear here real soon. It has been a long few months and I miss my sculpting greatly. Happy New Year!
It is hard to believe how fast this last year has come and gone.
Our family had a wonderful warm and toasty Christmas even though we are buried under
2 feet of snow. Brrrr....
I am looking forward to starting the new year off with some new projects. I am going to be branching out into some new areas besides my dolls. I just feel a stirring to
do this right now. Ummm... I call it artistic therapy. Good for the soul. Life is short. Have Fun!

Little Red Riding Hood & Wolf

This particular piece was alot of fun to work on especially the wolf. He started with a wire armature...epoxie...clay and finally to the tedious task of adding the fur little by little. My dog Sadie posed as a visual reference when I needed one. :) It is always a good idea to have as many visual reference materials as possible when working on animals. Here is just a sampling of the wolf photos I used in creating the Wolf.
